Astrology, with its predictions based on the stars and zodiac signs, holds a certain fascination and attracts many people in search of answers and guidance. However, for a Christian, faith and trust in astrology poses a fundamental spiritual problem. Christian belief is based on faith in God, the Creator and Supreme Guide, who calls us to place our trust in Him alone, rather than in practices that distract from this unique relationship. This is why Christians are strongly encouraged to turn away from astrology.
I- God as the only guide and source of truth
The Bible teaches that God is the only guide of our lives and the source of all truth. The Christian faith calls us to trust in God’s wisdom and seek His ways to understand the world and our existence. In the book of Isaiah 47:13-14 , God warns against astrologers: “Let your astrologers and your stargazers stand and save you if they are able. Behold, they will be stubble; the fire will burn them up.” This passage indicates that astrological practices cannot offer real answers and have no reliable protective or spiritual power.
II- Astrology, a diversion of trust in God
Astrology encourages the belief in determinism based on the position of the stars, as if human destiny were controlled by created elements and not by God Himself. This goes against the Christian teaching that only God knows the purposes of each person and guides human life. Psalm 139 reminds us that God knows each of our days and every thought before they even exist: “Lord, you have searched me and known me; you know when I sit down and when I rise up.”
III- Human freedom according to the Christian faith
In the Christian faith, God has endowed each person with free will, the freedom to choose and turn to Him. Astrology, by suggesting that our personality and destiny are dictated by our zodiac sign or by the alignment of the stars, limits this freedom by imposing predefined character traits and choices. This idea contradicts the Christian faith which teaches that each person is unique, created in the image of God, free to make their own choices and capable of finding the truth and the way to God.
IV- Seek answers in prayer rather than in the stars
Christianity teaches that Christians should look to God for guidance and comfort, not to the stars or predictions. Prayer is a direct and living way to communicate with God and seek His help. Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew 6:33 , invites believers to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” for it is in God that we find the answers to our questions, not in astrological signs or other divinations.
V- Astrology as a risk of spiritual deviation
For the Church, astrology can easily lead to spiritual confusion, even idolatry. Placing our faith in signs or predictions is tantamount to looking for answers outside of God. Astrology can also distract from true spiritual seeking, where prayer, the sacraments, and reading God’s Word are the preferred means for growing in wisdom and inner peace.
Conclusion
The Christian faith calls each person to look solely to God for truth, hope, and direction in life. Astrology, which offers answers and predictions based on created things rather than the Creator, distracts from this intimate and trusting relationship. By choosing to reject astrology, Christians are called to affirm their faith in God alone, through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and love for Him and their neighbor.
